Day 1--Vegas

Las Vegas is the first stop on the 2013 Western Scenic Tour.

Breakfast at the Garden Buffet in South Point started our day.  As we didn’t officially begin the tour until 2 pm, some of us did a casual drive to Count’s Kustom cars.  Ed, Mary, Norbert and Terry did a drive to the Hoover Dam.

The Count’s Kustom visit was an unofficial activity just to fill in the morning until the tour officially began.  It was ok.  It was a little warehouse with custom cars.  Basically just some good photo opportunities.

Orientation Meeting
The tour officially began at 2:00 in the South Point lobby.  We handed out orientation packets, and hit the road to the Mob Museum.  It was a fun drive down the strip!  Heads turned at the sight of our colorful row of cars:  red, green, black, blue and gold.  Unfortunately, we lost Pete and his red Corvette at this stage due to some mechanical difficulties, but we gained Jim and Denise in a 1993 Panoz and Dave and Shari in a 2009 GT1 Coupe Corvette!

Group tour of Mob Museum
We got to the Mob Museum after a ride down the strip passing through modern and old Vegas, consisting of massive modern casinos and drive-through wedding chapels.  It was interesting to see the progression from modern to classic...like driving back through time.  The Mob Museum was a wonderful tour.  Our group had a private tour guide, who showed us through the three-floor museum with talks about various exhibits.  If you have any interest in mob history, this museum is a must!

Priority Parking at Stratosphere
After the tour, we caravanned to the Stratosphere Casino for dinner at Roxy’s.  We had special parking in front of the casino, and simply put, it was just so cool.  I think we all felt special backing our cars in, all in a row, the bright lights of the parking cover shining down on the row of fancy cars.  We all felt that “butterflies in the stomach” sense of pride as we walked away, trying not to notice everyone admiring us and wondering who we all were.  Hehe.

Dinner at Roxy’s was AWESOME!  Roxy’s is a 50/60‘s diner style restaurant with classic car memorabilia and related movie posters and video.  The place is illuminated with neon lighting, creating a really nice nostalgic atmosphere.  Meals consisted of hamburgers, fries, blts, steak and cheese, etc.  It was great food.  AND, best of all, we had LIVE entertainment.  Two ladies individually broke into song throughout our meal, and it was SO much fun.  For some reason, they each took a liking to Norbert (who had to dine solo because his sweetie, Terry, was resting).  It was hilarious.

We then returned to the South Point after a return drive on the Vegas strip.  We had a meeting to discuss the next day’s drive, socialized, and rested for the next day.

On the road to Zion National Park!
